MAAYAH TEA

Maayah Tea is a family-run tea brand from Assam dedicated to crafting pure, handmade teas in micro-lots. Our teas come from our own 25-year-old garden, where every leaf is hand-plucked and carefully processed. We focus on clean, honest flavours that reflect the true spirit of Assam.

Every leaf at Maayah Tea is hand-plucked, gently hand-rolled, and dried in small batches without heavy machinery. This slow, careful process preserves the leaf’s natural oils, structure, and aroma, resulting in deeper, more expressive flavours than mass-produced teas.

Our tea journey began over 25 years ago with a small family garden in Assam. Over time, we shifted from conventional practices to minimal-input, handmade tea making. Today, our garden reflects tradition, care, and a commitment to crafting clean, authentic Assam teas.

We moved away from input-heavy methods to protect soil health, plant vitality, and long-term sustainability. Minimal-input cultivation reduces chemical use and keeps the tea closer to its natural state, giving a cleaner taste and supporting a healthier ecosystem in our garden.

Micro-lot teas are extremely small harvest batches crafted with close attention to leaf quality, weather, and processing. Each lot has its own character and flavour profile that cannot be duplicated in large-scale production, making every batch unique and special.

Maayah Tea focuses exclusively on handmade micro-lot teas, using minimal-input cultivation and traditional processing. While most Assam teas are machine-made, our teas are crafted entirely by hand, preserving natural character, aroma, and depth in every batch.

HANDMADE TEA

Handmade Assam tea is crafted entirely by hand, from plucking and rolling to shaping and drying. No industrial machines are used. This gentle, small-batch process protects the leaf’s natural oils and produces smoother texture, deeper aroma, and richer flavour in the cup.

Machine-made teas are processed quickly in bulk, often breaking leaves and flattening flavour. Handmade teas are rolled and shaped slowly in small batches, preserving leaf integrity and aromatic complexity. This results in cleaner, more defined flavours and a more expressive tea.

Handmade teas retain more essential oils and avoid the harsh cutting and crushing typical in machine production. Slow, careful oxidation allows flavours to develop naturally, creating layered aromas and sweetness. This gives handmade teas a depth and softness that stands out in every sip.

Our process begins with selective hand-plucking, followed by gentle withering to relax the leaves. We then hand-roll in small batches, allow controlled natural oxidation, and finish with careful drying. Each stage is monitored closely to highlight Assam’s terroir in every micro-lot.

Handmade tea is often fresher because leaves are processed quickly and gently right after plucking. Minimal bruising helps preserve antioxidants, polyphenols, and natural oils. With fewer harsh steps, the tea stays closer to its original form and offers a clean, vibrant cup.

Use about 2 grams of tea per cup. For black tea, steep for 2–3 minutes; for green tea, 1.5–2 minutes with slightly cooler water. Avoid over-steeping to keep flavours balanced. Handmade teas respond well to small adjustments, so you can fine-tune to your taste.

Assam tea and origins

Assam’s tropical climate, fertile alluvial soil, and heavy monsoon rains create ideal conditions for tea. These factors combine to produce bold, full-bodied teas with natural sweetness and strength. Assam is recognised as one of the world’s most important and distinctive tea regions.

Assam tea is known for its malty richness, warm honey-like aroma, and deep body. Handmade Assam teas can reveal even more nuance, with notes of cocoa, caramel, gentle florals, and soft earthiness. These flavours make Assam tea beloved in breakfast blends and pure loose-leaf form worldwide.

Heavy rainfall, high humidity, and warm temperatures in Assam encourage lush leaf growth and concentrated flavour. This climate helps create teas with strong colour, thick body, and the signature malty profile that Assam is famous for around the world.

Most Assam tea is produced using large machines to meet global demand. Handmade Assam tea is labour-intensive and slow, requiring skilled hands and small-batch processing. Only a few producers, like Maayah Tea, choose to preserve this artisanal method, which makes these teas limited and special.

Yes, Assam tea is one of the most widely enjoyed black teas in the world. Its bold, strong character makes it a favourite in Europe, the UK, the US, and Asia, both in blends and as single-origin tea. Interest in handmade Assam teas is also steadily growing .
